THE COMPANIES

The company was one of the biggest in the Val di Chiana region, south of Tuscany.  The hilly lands around Cortona, mainly cultivated as vineyards, were extended round the 18th century villa, centre of the property and historical residence of the noble family who initiated production and remained the owner of the company until the 60s.  Luigi d’Alessandro bought the company in 1967.

The Vineyards
Following an experiment carried out in 1988, where, thanks to a long-lasting collaboration with Attilio Scienza, 5 hectares of vineyards have been bedded out with cloning of different types of selected varietals of high quality and numerous rootstocks, arising in a peremptory direction towards an optimal relationship between place and varietal : Syrah.  The characteristics of the terrain (average mixture with a high percentage of clay), drought in the summer months, great luminosity and summer heat, make this area the ideal place for the qualitative development of this varietal.

Between 1990 and 2002, 48 hectares were planted as vineyards, all having a high plant density (7,000 vines, 1.30 m between the rows and 1.10m on the rows), after the total explantation of a good 62 hectares of cloning amounts of Sangiovese and Trebbiano (2m x 3m, equal to 1,600 vines per hectare).  In the last 10 hectares of new plants, the distance on the rows has been reduced to 0,90m in order to obtain a better homogeneity of fruit on the cordon.
