THE COMPANIES

Founded in 1937, thanks to the initiative of fourteen pioneering producers, the company started its production history in 1940 with its first year of bottling.  After overcoming the difficult years that followed the Second World War and the reorganisation of land in the 50s, Vecchia Cantina, gave a propulsive boost in the 60s and 70s over the whole territory, a role it still maintains today, representing not only an important wine-growing company in Tuscany, but also a valuable association between wine, culture and traditions of Montepulciano.  Vecchia Cantina’s emblem, present on all bottles, depicts a ‘rampant winged lion’, a fictitious icon fabricated from the alliance between the ‘rampant gryphon’, ancient mythological symbol that evokes the long history of the municipality of Montepulciano to its Etruscan origin, and ‘the lion’, expression of Florentine dominion that has deeply influenced the lives of the people of Montepulciano both on a political administrative level, as well as, from the urban architectural point of view during the 15th century. .

The Vineyards
Approximately 280 hectares have been inscribed to the register for the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, approximately 120 for Rosso di Montepulciano; approximately 340 for Chianti and Chianti Colli Senesi; approximately 70 for that of DOC Valdichiana; approximately 25 for that of Cortona, and the remaining comprises vineyards for the production of wines having a typical geographic location and table wine.  The main cultivated varieties having red berries are: Sangiovese (in Montepulciano known as Prugnolo Gentile), Canaiolo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.  Those having while berries are: Tuscan Trebbiano, Malvasia, Grechetto, Viogner, Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
