D.O.C. Cortona – Controlled Place of Origin Cortona

Art. 3. Area of Production of the Grapes

The area of production of grapes, presently certifying the production of wines from controlled place of origin “Cortona” falls on the Province of Arezzo and includes lands predisposed to quality from the territory administration of the municipality of Cortona.  Such area is highly delimited: from the locality Villa le Fosse, situated on the provincial road of Lauretana, west of Val Trito bridge on Torrente Mucchia and proceeding clockwise on the imaginary line situated at 260 m.a.s.l. in a south-easterly direction skirting the hills of S. Lorenzo Rinfrena, Molinaccio until the farm Le Caselle in the vicinity of the fraction of Petraia.  From the said farm, always keeping the same altitude of 260 m.a.s.l. in the direction of the farm Landrucci, proceed until coming across the railway tracks in the built-up area of Terontola.  From this point, following the right-side line of the track Firenze-Roma in a southern direction until finding the municipality border in the vicinity of Casa Borgino.  Follow the municipality border in a westerly direction for the whole stretch to the border with Umbria and successively with the Province of Siena in the direction of the locality of Fasciano, situated on the extreme west of the municipality border.  Always following this direction, on the west of the locality of Fasciano, the same imaginary line at 260 m.a.s.l. can be taken to skirt the hills of Fasciano and Poggio Martino and subsequently Gabbiano, Fusigliano, Poppello, Il Loggio, Rione and Poggio di Chiana, and always at the cited level, in the direction of Cignano and subsequently skirt S. Martino alla Ruota and La Chianacce.  Still on the referred level, from Chianacce in the direction of Farneta and continuing to Poggio Bello until closing the whole hilly territory of the close oriented on the west.  Following the said 260 m.a.s.l., proceed north in the direction of Opiello, Podere S. Giovanni, until the fraction of Creti and turn towards east until you go round the hill of Ronzano and Fratticciola and south-east in the direction of Manzano skirting the hills of Gaggiole and Lombriciano and those of Montecchio until Vecchia Fornace and beyond, until the hills of Fondaccio where, always at 260 m.a.s.l., Villa Le Fosse is seen; starting point.  With the exception of the expanse, corresponding to the railway track and the municipality border for the whole described perimeter, which can only be attested at 260 m.a.s.l.  From the church of Mezzavia on the crossroad between s.s. 71 and the municipality border of Cortona with that of Castiglion Fiorentino, proceed clockwise for the said municipality border in a northern direction up until Casa La Ripa di Sotto where the imaginary line of 700 m.a.s.l. is met.  Turning towards southeast and proceeding on the imaginary altitude of 700 m.a.s.l. delimiting all the hills which, seen from below, are on the left and subsequently on the right of the city of Cortona, until reaching Poggio alla Croce uphill of Valico di Mercatale on the provincial road with the same name.  From this point, follow the crest line that forms the watershed between the basins of Torrente Esse (Arno basin) and the Fosso di Rifalcio (Tevere basin).  From the said crest, uphill from Podere Renali until the municipality border of Cortona with the municipality of Tuoro sul Trasimeno.  Follow the border in a westerly direction until reaching, uphill of the locality Borghetto, the railway track of Terontola-Perugia.  Keep to the right side of the said railway track, in the direction of Terontola until the latter locality where the said railway joins the Roma-Firenze line.  Follow the track Roma-Firenze in the direction of Firenze until reaching a country road downhill from Podere via Cupa.  Follow this road until coming across the municipality road Mucchia-Ossaia taking the direction of Ossaia to reach, after the crossroad with ss.71, the municipality road that leads to Campaccio.  Follow the said way until the bridge on the stream, Esse, where the municipality road runs along the said stream, proceeding in the direction of Camucia until inserting on ss.71.  From this point, follow ss.71 in a northern direction for the whole way on the territory of Cortona until Chiesa di Mezzavia; starting point.  From the church of S. Agata alla Fratta situated at 260 m.a.s.l., proceed clockwise on the imaginary line towards west and skirt the hills of Fratta and S.Caterina and subsequently, always at the same altitude, bending north and then east delimiting the two hills until the church of Fratta; starting point.
